Kinja'd!!!

I’ve gotten a total of three tickets in my entire life. The first was in 2012 for going 16 over in a 45mph. The one was $120. The second time, I was clocked going 5 over in a 35mph (different county), that one was also $120. But just last Fall, I got the ticket to end all of my tickets, a window tint violation...valued at just $335...or more than the other two tickets combined.

How? I got stopped in a highly affluent neighbourhood, where the police don’t believe in “fix it” tickets and court costs START at $298.

The officer searched my car (it smelled like skunk outside and he assumed it was coming from my car), found nothing, then I was given a patdown by himself or his lady partner...I can’t remember. Anyway, he sent me on my way with the promise that so long as I show the judge a timestamped picture of the car without tints, the ticket would be thrown out. Nope.

I’m still not finished paying the ticket. $335 and SR-22 insurance requirement just for tints. *Sigh*

Does anyone out there have anything worse?

I think my only ticket was around $170 for 5x in a 35. Still paying for it through insurance until August of this year... All in all probably cost me $1,500. Radar detector was in my back seat not hooked up.

$508: towing a trailer 65 in a 55 in California. We were really doing 75, but we were grown up about it when Chippy pulled us over and he only wrote us for 65. I shudder to think what 75 would have cost. My wife was driving and I believe she went to a comedy driving school to get rid of the point.

Most expensive ever was like €120. Germany is cheap when it comes to speeding. The only downside with that ticket is that I now have 3 months left to hand in my license for 30 days. OUCH!!!!!

I’ve only received speed camera tickets. The last 3 abroad (Germany), the last of two in my own country in 2012. The German ones were €30 a piece, for 19 (kmh) over. The Dutch ones were higher for a lower violation, but still in the mid 2 digits.

Circa 2008, I got a 110 in a 45, somehow avoided reckless driving charge, but still lost my license for a year. I think the ticket cost between $300-400 itself and another $700 or so for an attorney that basically just kept it from being any worse. Gobs and gobs of money in insurance, and I wound up selling the bike in a rush, losing my ass on it. All told, the whole experience probably wound up costing more than $8K. But he infraction itself (if you include attorney fees) was more like $1,100. Ah to be young and dumb.

PS, where do you live that they basically string you up by your toenails for having window tint?

To be fair, I think I’ve been stopped 10 times in the past year, the worst for going 40 over the speed limit...Usually the cop is laughing so hard at the thought of a speeding smart that he just lets me go free.

I can’t argue with that. If we’d been going 65, he might not have pulled us over at all.

We pulled a tent trailer from the Pacific to the Atlantic and back twice. We found 65-70 to be a comfortable speed. 14-inch tires on the trailer. Even Chippy admitted to us that the low sixties would’ve been okay. We weren’t that upset about it at the time, but the fine seemed exorbitant to us.

I believe the most for mine was $225. It was an illegal u-turn. All I was doing was heading to dinner and it was across the street. I should’ve known better but Mrs. firewrx and I were having a heated debate when she said “you can’t do a u-turn here” and I said “watch me”. Next thing I knew, a cop showed up out of nowhere and stopped me in the parking lot where I was meeting my family.

Needless to say...it was an awkward dinner with my family and one irate wife.

Only ticket I got that stuck was for 70 in a 50. (km/h) $130. My insurance on my truck went up $200 as a result of the two points, which doesn’t sound like much until you realize I was only paying $500/year.

The more expensive ticket I got but fought and won (kinda) was for driving through a do-not-entre sign. The sign itself was pointed at such an angle that it would have been impossible to see from the direction I approached it until it was too late to not drive through without having to back out onto a highway. I parked, got out, and then the cop kinda pulled up along side and got out. Young cop absolutely furious that so many people were ignoring the sign, interrupted himself twice while writing my ticket to walk over and tell two other people they were getting one too. $200 ticket, plus two more points on my licence. To make matters worse, I’d borrowed my roommate’s Jeep, only to discover that it’s actually his maternal grandfather’s Jeep, so it’s registered in a name I don’t recognize at all, and to top it off I’d been at a bar the night before, and left my driver’s license in the pants I wasn’t wearing... fortunately I did have some other stuff in my wallet with my name on it, including an out-of-date student ID card with my picture on it, but I could tell he was pretty suspicious of how this guy with no official ID came to be driving this Jeep registered to a guy I don’t know. But that one ironed itself out I guess.
Fast-forward to my court date (no joke, six months later) and I’m sitting behind the cop who gave me the ticket in the court room. Senior looking officers are coaching him on taking the stand as if it was his first time. During a recess, the crown attorney calls my name, apparently I was supposed to talk to him before hand, but no one told me that. He tries to convince me to change my plea from Not Guilty to guilty with an explanation, on the grounds that I hadn’t argued (per the officer’s notes) I hadn’t driven past the sign, only that I hadn’t seen it. I said uh, no, and showed him the picture I’d taken. He said “well, you may have a defense there” in a tone that made it clear we were done talking. Then during the next recess, he went over and talked to the cop who gave me the ticket. My name was first on the docket when the session resumed. They called my name, I went up to the front, and the crown attorney ruffles the ticket papers, and says “Well, this is a little embarrassing, but the crown can’t read the issuing officer’s name on the ticket. Is he here?” He looks around the courtroom, none of the six cops twitch, but the one who gave me the ticket is staring at his boots. “Well, I guess the crown won’t be pursuing this ticket. You’re free to go.” The judge bangs his gavel and says dismissed. That was that.

$500 for 98 in a 50. Got it reduced to 9 over, a $120 fine and a probation before judgement(basically keep my ass clean for a year and the ticket goes away, get another infraction, and I get the OG fine plus whatever the new ticket is).

$800 total for expired registration. $400 in fines, $400 in towing fees. Word to the wise, don’t get your car towed after hours the day before thanksgiving. I couldn’t get my car back until the following Monday(because they weren’t open on thanksgiving, black friday or weekends, and the charged me for all 6 days). I had to walk home 8 miles and on the way back helped the cop that wrote me up get some random woman that high centered her car off the curb. He clearly felt super-bad about it. Fairly sure that’s why he didn’t show up to the hearing, letting me off the hook for the citation and fines.

O.K. Sit back and relax, this is gonna take a minute.

My junior year at the Air Force Academy, they finally let us have our cars on Campus. Car sits idle three weeks at a time (I was working on a double Major and had no life). My first trip home solo in my 1976 Jaguar XJS, I find myself bored to tears crossing Kansas on I-70, so I step it up a little bit, then a little more, and maybe a little more. After about an hour of this I crest a hill and lo and behold there’s a state trooper less than a 1/2 mile at the bottom of the hill, but my radar detector doesn’t go off. I slam on the brakes... nothing. Oh shit I’m airborne, check the speedo - 152MPH. A second later all four wheels are skidding down the hill billowing smoke and rubber. I coast past the trooper at 64MPH and he just sits there.

30 miles down the road, he catches up to me and pulls me over. He tells me he knows I was well over 100 when I came over the hill, but his radar couldn’t get a lock through all the smoke and when it finally did it was 64 in a 55. He stopped me anyway just to let me know I wasn’t getting away with anything here in Kansas.

The ticket cost me $150. The four flat-spotted tires cost me $1600.

I earned and paid all my tickets, except the bogus one. . .
When driving the limit in my green ‘71 Pinto hatchback (the one with the pencil-thin bumpers) around a bend in the road, I am passed by another (beige) Pinto (probably a ‘73 or later) (sedan) (with the enormous bumpers) probably going 30 over.
HaHaHa, thinks I, someone’s in a hurry! Just then a local cop comes zooming around the same corner and tickets +me+ for speeding! Not so funny now, Bungalow Breath!
So I go before “Hanging Judge (last name withheld)“ in traffic court, even though I am probably going to be found guilty and have to pay someone else’s fine. While I am waiting and fuming, I see one of the attorneys I worked for that Summer, and he asks me what I am doing there. He listens to my story and says “Just sit there when your name is called. I’ll represent you.” The following exchange ensues:
Hanging Judge: “. . .so how do you plead?”
Lawyer: “Your Honor, in the interest of justice, I move that this case be dismissed.”
Hanging Judge: “I see. Would justice be served by having this case dismissed?”
Lawyer: “Yes, your honor, I believe that justice would be served by having this case dismissed.”
Hanging Judge: “Case dismissed.” (pause, shuffling the paperwork) “And councilor, are we still on for golf next Thursday?”
Cost for ticket, $0. Cost for attorney, $0. Getting a bogus ticket dismissed by the Hanging Judge, Priceless.

Try looking up the fine is actually split up. I think the actual fine for speeding is super low, but it’s all the extra shit they add on which is stupid only because programs should not rely on funding from tickets.
